National Donut Day

D-Day (Jun. 5) Gets A 'Hole' Lot Sweeter

D-Day is taking on a "hole" new
meaning today (Jun. 5), because it's National Donut Day!

National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June and praises
the delectable, sweet snack which gained popularity in the U.S.
during WWI and WWII.

Donuts were popularized by the Salvation Army, and served to
soldiers in 1917 by their "lassies," brave volunteers who were sent
to the frontlines of Europe to make home-cooked foods for soldiers, (Imagine how uplifting that must have been for our solders to be serve hot fresh donuts - a taste of home and a recipe for success!).

It's said that the Salvation Army donuts were cooked in oil inside
of the metal helmets of American soldiers and numerous military briefings were intentionally prolonged as to eat more donuts!

The first National Donut Day was established in 1938 by the
Salvation Army to raise funds in the midst of The Great Depression,
and the "holey" holiday has been celebrated ever since.

The best way to celebrate "D-Day" is to make your own
donuts, which most bakers agree is a "lost art."
