Exhaust Hood And
Fire suppression (Working With Contractors
And Installation Procedure)
1. Call and ask a electrician/contractor for a reference to a Fire Suppression
company, a company the electrician has interacted with in the past.
2. Call and ask the recommended fire suppression company for a
reference to a mechanical contractor, a company they have work with in the past.
3. Now call the mechanical contractor and schedule all 3 persons to meet at your
location and discus your plan of action of the install of your exhaust hood and fire suppression
installation.
This way YOU are dialed in, also you get the most for your money!
Note: Always check references and local mechanical codes for your county.
Note: Your mechanical contractor will fill out the mechanical permit and submit
permit to the county mechanical inspector (Note: fire suppression system will fall under the existing
mechanical permit for hood and exhaust installation, remind fire suppression company of existing mechanical
permit) and the mechanical inspector will review exhaust system to determine any stipulation were Structural
Load Bearing and/or engineering approval is needed, based on existing building and proposed exhaust
system.
On a side note: You should not be required to provide Structural Load bearing
approval by mechanical architect based on 1500 cfm fan on roof “under 500 pounds”. Should you install a larger
exhaust hood system be prepared to provide approved mechanical architect engineering plans and you will be
required to install double walled ducking with fire protective wrapping.
Simply present the plans I have included to the county mechanical inspector and
modify as needed, also submit plans to your local fire department. The fire chief will appreciate this. I have
found it best not to hurt their feelings. Keep them in the loop! Even with county approval, moreover you will get
good advice and good standing with the Fire Chief.
Note: When submitting plans/permits to county always state on permit application
“Non Structural and non bearing work to be performed by licensed contractor."
You will need to schedule electrician, fire suppression contractor and mechanical
contractor to the job site for orientation of project and system to be installed. Prior to buying any exhaust
hood system remember that your donut fryer and any related equipment that requires exhaust of
fumes/smoke will dictate size of hood and will dictate fan and suppression system to be installed.
Noted below is additional information to assist you with the installation of
your system.
Installation
1. Determine location of hood, ideally against a wall. If you decide to place the
exhaust Hood in the center of the building such as I have, construct wall with Fire Resistant Material
such as F.R.P sanitary board “F.R.P now meets both Fire & Health Dept. Regulations” and make sure to tie
the wall into the rafters with metal strapping and take pictures for documentation. Also do not remove
stickers from F.R.P until all mechanical inspections are complete or use stainless/steel.
2. Mark location where you want electrical outlets
for 120v “for donut fryer
thermostat” and 220v for fryer “If acceptable” for electrician reference.
3. Mark on the wall for mechanical contractor, where you want a Gas line for fryer
(If acceptable).
4. The ceiling must be finished as to allow Fire Suppression Company to drill and wrought fire suppression
lines and with ceiling finished things go faster.
